On February 28, 2018, a massive distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) campaign targeted GitHub with a 1.3 Tbps (Terabytes per second) reflection attack. On March 5, 2018, a record 1.7 Tbps DDoS attack targeted a US-based service provider, reportedly using the same Memcached reflection vector as the one GitHub experienced in February.

The Memcached DDoS attacks have set new attack volume records, causing an unprecedented response by the security industry and community at large. Join Director of Security Allison Nixon for a Flash Talk as she provides a brief primer on DDoS using UDP reflection, discusses some of the new conversations that Memcached has forced, and how the "Terabit Era" is going to be fundamentally different from the "Gigabit Era".
